Winter lasts for almost half the year in Bansko. The old town nestles beneath the ice capped Pirin Mountains, the highest being Mount Vihren. There are just under 10,000 residents who inhabitat the town.The picturesque old medieval quarter sits comfortably with the new developments; in the old town a maze of cobbled lanes, timber and stone old houses with their substantial double wooden carved doors built originally to withstand mountain siege together with cosy family owned Mehanas or tavernas offering amazing local specialities at very reasonable prices.

During the evening there are local folk musicians performing Macedonian music which is incredibly atmospheric. Here seated around roaring open fires, the walls adorned with furs and locally woven rugs, there is mulled wine, local beer local drinks for you to enjoy and get merry! Since 1990 the town has become popular with Sofians asan out of town retreat, and in recent years there has been an explosion of tourist activity, and is now one of the best ski resorts within affordable distance from the UK.
